Mullan Tunnel Enlargement Project
| When the Mullan Pass tunnel was built it was shored with timbers and padded with concrete walls that were capped with an arch of red brick. LRL was awarded this $18 million project to blast, cut and chip away the existing tunnel walls and to reconstruct a new one that will be 5 feet taller and 3 feet wider than the original tunnel. |

This will make room for larger freight trains to go through and also help with overheating problems of trains passing through in which the wood in the tunnels catch on fire. LRL crews work daily at chiseling away the old bricks and covering the tunnel with shotcrete. |
